I OFFER YOU CERTAINTY THROUGH OBJECTIVE SCIENTIFIC RESULTS AS OPPOSED TO DOUBT BY SUBJECTIVE ESTIMATES.

When it comes to wood dating, the Matthaes family pioneered the use of spectroscopic analysis on wooden objects with the 1993 patented method by Gottfried Matthaes. With this method wooden objects can be dated precisely. For example, I can determine the type of wood and the age of a wood sample taken as follows:
Type of wood: deciduous tree (Linden wood)
Age: 1575 AD +/- 30 years

SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS -

WHAT IS IT?

Infrared spectroscopy has been used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for decades. It is based on two known factors:

 •    All materials on earth, including those used for art objects, consist of a mixture of specific molecules.

•    Some of these molecules change over time.

This change is made visible in a graph and is compared to a database.

Individual molecules or groups of molecules of a material were graphically represented by peaks and valleys of the absorption frequencies and measured by the computer. The attribution of a graph to a specific type of wood and a specific age required the measurement of a large number of previously dated wooden objects.

The absolute dating is done by comparing a newly created curve with the database of previous precisely dated wood samples.

The Gottfried Matthaes Foundation completed this long term intensive research and the development of the database in collaboration with renowned art museums in 1993.
